It’s spring break and you want to connect with your children. You don’t, however, feel like going out of your way or travelling too far. So why not cook with them, making food they can then eat using their fingers? I am always very open to involving my children in the kitchen, no matter how old they are. One can easily adapt the tasks according to their interests and abilities. In addition, in order to inculcate and encourage the development of healthy eating habits, I believe it is important to guide them towards independence in their eating habits. Finger foods are a great opportunity to practice this! So let me share with you my tips to occupy, feed, and entertain your children with a single activity. Here are two easy-to-make recipes. I asked my children what finger food they wanted to cook together. They loved the idea of eating with their hands so much and had several recipe ideas: popcorn, nachos, popsicles, and French toast. Tips to make it fun and easy breezy
  1. If you have several children, setting up a small station for each can help respect each one’s space without having to put their hands in the other one’s bowl.
  2. Choose simple recipes with a short list of ingredients. Focus on something that doesn’t take too long to do to keep everyone actively interested and involved.
  3. Provide kitchen tools adapted to them. Think wooden children’s knives, a stool to be at the right height, and smaller spatulas or whisks. Having their own utensils and working tools makes them proud, giving them the feeling that they have their own role and place in the kitchen.
