You’ve perhaps seen videos on social media featuring people massaging their faces with a heart-shaped, asymmetrical stone known as a gua sha. Here’s how you can incorporate this small tool into your beauty routine and enhance your skin’s glow.
What is Gua Sha?
It’s a smooth, polished stone with rounded edges, often made of jade or rose quartz, designed to fit the contours of your face. Stemming from traditional Chinese medicine, it’s used to massage the neck, jawline, cheeks, eyes and forehead.
What’s It For?
The gua sha is said to have a lifting effect on the skin, in addition to reducing puffy skin. It stimulates face muscles, the lymphatic system and improves blood circulation, according to proponents of this practice.
Regular use, two or three times per week, is believed to help improve skin tone and facial definition.
How to Use It
1. Begin by washing your face and the gua sha before starting the massage.
2. Apply a facial oil or serum to create a lubricating effect on the skin, so that the gua sha can glide smoothly. Ask the advice of a Rachelle Béry consultant in order to find the right product for you.
3. Hold the gua sha at a 45-degree angle and use your other hand to stretch the skin. Apply light to medium pressure, moving from the centre of the face outward, or from bottom to top.
4. The massage should follow this order: from the neck to the jawline, then the cheeks, eyes and forehead. Repeat each movement three to five times.
5. Use the different edges and points of the gua sha on different areas of the face. For example, use the wider part on the cheeks and the pointed end under the eyelids.
