The advantages of fair trade
Fair trade certification ensures that buyers and sellers respect the standards established by Fairtrade International (FLO), a worldwide certification organization. Thus, when you purchase fair trade products, you can be proud of the fact that you are helping to protect the environment and farmers’ rights.
Another advantage to choosing fair trade is the Fairtrade Premium. For every product sold, an additional Fairtrade Premium is given back to communities, allowing them to invest in projects. For example, in 2022, Rachelle Béry and Equifruit donated approximately $9 885 CAD in Fairtrade Social Premiums to communities in Ecuador and Peru.
Money raised via Fairtrade Premiums is directly reinvested into communities, allowing them to further their development. This money helps fund various projects, including in the health, education, clean drinking water, and insurance sectors. It’s also used to help improve agricultural techniques, thus ensuring higher revenue for community farmers and contributing to a more sustainable way of life.
